I was born in 1946 in South St Louis. It was right after WWII and S. St Louis was pretty much German/Irish and many of the Germans were first generation Americans. Many German born and American-First Born spoke with German Accents and spoke German in the Home. It was common to be on a Bus, in a Store, in the Neighborhood and hear German being spoken.

Some of these German kids were still speaking with an Accent in the ’60’s in High School. With One Very Important difference. Their Parents understood that it was imperitive that their children learn and speak Proper English to succeed. Most still spoke German but also came to speak impeccable English. I stay in touch with many of these children of WWII. Almost ALL are very successful and speak Proper English. Oddly enough, we went to school with many other Eastern European kids (Serbian, Croation, Hungarian, etc.) that also experienced the same.

There isn’t a Good Excuse for Black Children to speak Ebonics. Failure is laziness. And speaking Ebonics at Home would be an easier transition to Standard English that German, Spanish, Japanese, etc. Time to STOP making excuses.

Conservatives oppose the public school system because they don’t like lower class people or minorities getting free educations. They think that the privilege of a good education should be reserved for the rich elite who can afford private schools. This is the main goal of conservative ideology: to set up and maintain an aristocracy in which a small group of wealthy elites and tycoons rule unopposed over an impoverished mass of virtual slaves, too uninformed to know they’re being oppressed and too unskilled to move up in society.

In fact, the only reason this country has so many educated, successful people in it is because of the public school system, in which everyone is entitled to an education. A society without public schools is a society where the poor cannot afford education and therefore cannot lift themselves out of their lot in life. The fact that a site entitled “Make Stupidity History” is railing against an institution that has pretty much single-handedly generated an educated, well-informed, and financially well-off society such as ours is asinine.

I deeply regret the actions of the past. However, more investigation with evidence will prove that I did in no way EVER appear at my place of work under the influence of anything except the responsibilities set before me; that the tow lot documentation regarding the sale of said vehicle by mistake was in fact altered after my resignation; that there are many records of meeting between the City of Kansas City and the Kansas City Police Department regarding the blatant disregard for police department SOPS requiring officers to mark vehicles on hold for the safe containment of said vehicles at the impound lot; that many, many officers failed to follow this procedure; that I personally requested the proper materials to mark vehicles ‘on hold’ for evidence and that by my own staff since officers were and are negligent in this matter. Moreover, given the gravity of this case, the vehicle should never have been placed in an inadequate lot, but rather at a more secured facility of the police department; that I did plead guilty to the criminal offense of which I was charged and that I successfully completed my court-ordered sentence. Again, no excuse for my incident which is separate and apart from the alleged mishandling of evidence in this case. I am in fact guilty of Alcholic Stupidity. I am in fact innocent of this misinformation regarding the ’sale of the said vehicle to be used as evidence’. A cursory investigation of all records, processes, responsibilities, documents in by an independent source not affiliated with the Police Department or the city impound lot would immediately exhonorate me and uncover several larger equally important similar situations. I am keenly aware of the source of this misinformation and the reasons giving prompt. I deeply regret the outcome that we all have to live with, more to the families who have sufferet loss. I further regret that this editorial/news forum lacks the credibility to verify rumor even if provided by a member of the Kansas City Police Department to escape beneath the outcry of my own aggreous behaivior on a non-related matter. To the reader, I’ll forever regret a deplorable decision on one night. I’ll forever regret the outcome of the matters of evidence and the trial. I’ll probably forever regret that NOTHING will be done to address the horrible and unethical methodology and practices (or lack thereof) by the Department and by some of the impound staff.

if it taught the kid a lesson, i don’t see the harm in it. the only thing i don’t know if i like is that, at the end, she seemed like she wasn’t even happy about it. it was like she was more afraid of the punishment than her future. you can punish a kid, sure; but it’s pointless if they aren’t seeing exactly what you are trying to teach.

Ebonics is not only spoken by blacks. Many whites down south speak the very same Ebonics. People learn language through social interactions, not through the media and reading books. The environment in which someone is in greatly influences the language that they use. I agree with Brain’s comments. I also believe that children should learn how to code-switch.

I’m sorry, but thinking this poor woman deserves a ticket speaks to how heartless and cruel people have become in our communities. Just because the 911 misunderstood the fact that “my baby” was really her cat Baby is not the fault of this poor woman. It shows how people assume things without asking questions. Did the 911 officer ask “how old is the child”? That question would have solved the problem right there if helping the commuity and our elderly is a misdemener than we should just forget about hiring “Community Peace Officers”.

Afro-American children speak ebonics which is an English Dialect. We should respect their uniqueness instead of trying to teach them that their use of English is wrong. We should try to teach them using ebonics when possible.

no, “do dat” is not complete enough to be ebonics. it’s just short hand spelling. if you were to say “why you do that?” instead of “why did you do that?” then it would be considered ebonics.

Um…the problem at what he did was? A person goes to the doctor, and he tells them whats wrong, and then they get mad because they could fix it and he told them that….hmmm…. does that even make sense?
